Our Wildlife Hospital Has Officially Opened!

We recently celebrated the Official Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital — a milestone many years in the making, and one that continues to shape the future of wildlife care in our region.

The day began with a moving Welcome to Country from Ricky Cook, grounding us in the spirit of community and care. From there, it was all smiles (and a few tears of joy) as we came together to mark this shared achievement.

Smiles All Round

The ribbon was officially cut by The Hon. Janelle Saffin MP, who reminded us what makes NRWH so special:

“What I want to say about the Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital is that it’s totally 100% community-owned, community-driven, and community-run. Everyone is a volunteer. A lot of good things that happen in the community come from a group of good people, like-minded people who come together and say, ‘This is a need.’ And that’s what everybody did, and we ended up with the Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital.”

We also heard from Madeleine Faught, Dr Megan Kearney, Dr Robert Kooyman, and Treasurer Ninian Gemmell, who each reflected on the journey to get here and what the hospital means for our wildlife.

Madeleine summed it up beautifully:

“The pain of the challenges, the delays, the weather, COVID, are now behind us, and we get to move forward from here on. And we’re already working with a lot of animals, so there is a lot to be happy for and a lot to look forward to in terms of our wonderful animal survival.”

And as Dr Megan shared:

“If rescued wild animals receive veterinary assessments and treatment within the first 24 hours, we can improve the outcomes for wildlife. And that’s really what’s motivating me and many of us as part of the team in the Northern Rivers Wildlife Hospital.”

Distinguished guests and local MPs

We also welcomed other distinguished members of our community including Tamara Smith MP and Sue Higginson MLC.

Already Making a Difference

Even before our official opening, the hospital had been treating patients. Since its soft launch, we’ve already cared for over 360 sick, injured, and orphaned native animals. From tiny joeys to raptors, every life saved is proof of what this hospital makes possible.

Looking Ahead

Stage One may be complete, but this is only the beginning. Plans for Stage Two include:
🌱 A dedicated animal pathology and diagnostic lab to better manage emerging diseases.
🌱 Outdoor enclosures for animals in intermediate care and rehabilitation.

A Community Achievement

The opening day brought together our veterinary team, wildlife carers, volunteers, supporters, and government representatives — every one of them part of this journey.

This hospital is proof of what can be achieved when a community comes together with determination and care for the precious native animals we share our region with. We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and even more excited for what lies ahead.
