Lewin’s Honeyeater Chick’s Journey to Recovery

Meet this tiny Lewin’s Honeyeater chick, rescued after a rough start to life. Just one week old, the chick had fallen from its nest twice and even got its leg caught. Thankfully, Cassa from Eden at Byron Nursery spotted the struggling chick and brought it to Vitality Vetcare for urgent care (some of our Volunteers are working out of Vitality Vetcare while we finalise utilities at the new Wollongbar hospital).

At the clinic, NRWH Director Dr Megan provided warmth, fluids, and fed the chick every two hours. After two days of care, it was strong enough to try life in the wild again. Working together, Dr Megan, NRWH member Bernie, and Cassa carefully relocated the potted tree and nest to a quieter, more sheltered spot at Eden at Byron.

Just hours later, the chick’s parents returned—feeding and caring for their little one! Over the next few days, the chick opened its eyes, found its chirp, and started exploring outside the nest. With gentle encouragement from its parents, it is now taking its first hops into the world! 💚

A huge thank you to Cassa and the team at Eden at Byron for their incredible care and support. This story is a beautiful reminder of what’s possible when our community comes together to protect wildlife.
